iCloud ID Remover – How to Remove Apple ID from Any iPhone

Lisa OuUpdated by Lisa Ou / April 01, 2026 09:00

I’ve had to remove an iCloud ID more times than I can count.

Sometimes it was my own device – I was selling my old iPhone and needed to wipe it clean. Sometimes it was a forgotten Apple ID password – I could use the phone but couldn’t update apps or change settings. And sometimes, it was a used iPhone I bought that turned out to be locked to someone else’s account.

iCloud ID Remover – How to Remove Apple ID from Any iPhone

Each situation required a different approach. After going through all of them, I’ve learned there are 5 real ways to remove an iCloud ID. Let me walk you through them.

Before we get into the methods, here’s what I wish someone had told me upfront:

Removing an iCloud ID is not the same as removing a passcode. A passcode just locks the screen. An iCloud ID locks the device to a specific Apple account. Even after wiping the phone, you can’t use it without that account’s password.

If you know the password, it’s easy. Like, five minutes easy.

If you don’t know the password, you have options. But they’ll either require proof of purchase or a third-party tool – and your data will be wiped.

Jailbreaking won’t help. I looked into it. Read forum threads. Almost tried it. Then I realized: jailbreaking doesn’t remove Activation Lock. It just opens up your device to security risks and voids your warranty. Not worth it.

Alright, let’s get into what actually worked for me.

Guide

Guide List

Part 1: Sign Out Apple ID Directly

This is the simplest situation. You own the device, you know your Apple ID password, and you want to remove it – maybe you’re selling the phone, maybe you want to switch to a new Apple ID, maybe you just want to start fresh.

I do this every time I sell an old iPhone.

Here’s what I do:

Step 1Open Settings on the iPhone.

Step 2Tap your name at the top – that’s your Apple ID profile.

Step 3Scroll down to the bottom and tap Sign Out.

sign out apple id

Step 4Enter your Apple ID password when prompted. This turns off Find My iPhone and removes the account.

Step 5Choose what data you want to keep on the device (photos, contacts, etc.). If I’m selling it, I leave everything unchecked.

Step 6Tap Sign Out again to confirm.

That’s it. The iCloud ID is gone. The next person can set up the phone with their own Apple ID. Or you can sign back in with a different account.

  • Helps you unlock iPhone screen.
  • Removes Apple ID or its password.
  • Remove screen time or restriction passcode in seconds.

When this works:

  1. You know your Apple ID password
  2. You have physical access to the device
  3. The device is working normally

When it doesn’t:

  1. You forgot your password (I’ll cover that next)
  2. You don’t have the device anymore (like you sold it but forgot to sign out)

Part 2: Reset iCloud Password or Remove It Remotely

This happened to me once. I had an old iPhone that I hadn’t used in years. I wanted to sell it, but when I turned it on, I couldn’t remember the Apple ID password. I knew it was my account – I just couldn’t get in.

I had two options.

Option A: Reset Your Apple ID Password

Here’s what I did:

Step 1I went to iforgot.apple.com on my laptop.

Step 2I entered my Apple ID (my email address).

Step 3Apple gave me two options:

  1. Reset via SMS – if you still have a trusted phone number on file
  2. Account recovery – if you don’t, which was my case

Step 4I chose account recovery. It told me to wait 24 hours.

Step 5The next day, I got a text with a link to reset my password.

Step 6I created a new password, then went back to the iPhone and signed out using Method 1.

Option B: Remove Remotely via iCloud (If You Don’t Have the Device)

If you don’t have the device in your hands – maybe you sold it but forgot to sign out – you can remove the iCloud ID remotely.

I had to do this once when I sold an iPhone on eBay and shipped it before remembering to sign out.

Here’s what I did:

Step 1I opened a browser on my laptop and went to icloud.com/find.

Step 2I signed in with my Apple ID.

Step 3I clicked All Devices and selected the iPhone I’d sold.

Step 4I clicked Remove from Account.

The buyer messaged me a few minutes later: “It’s unlocked! Thanks!”

  • Helps you unlock iPhone screen.
  • Removes Apple ID or its password.
  • Remove screen time or restriction passcode in seconds.

Important: This removes the Activation Lock but does not erase the device. If the device still has your data on it, you might want to choose Erase iPhone instead of Remove from Account – but that will wipe everything.

When this works:

  1. You’re the original owner
  2. You still have access to your Apple ID (or can reset it)
  3. You have internet access

When it fails:

  1. You can’t reset your password because you no longer have access to your trusted phone or email

Part 3: iCloud Remove from Account

This is the situation I found myself in when I bought a used iPhone from a friend. The phone worked fine, but when I wiped it, I got hit with their Apple ID. I just messaged them and asked.

Here’s what they did:

Step 1They went to icloud.com/find and signed in.

Step 2They clicked All Devices and selected the iPhone.

Step 3They clicked Remove from Account.

That was it. Took them less than a minute. I set up the phone with my own Apple ID and it’s worked perfectly ever since.

If you’re the buyer: Just ask the seller politely. Most people forget to sign out – it’s not malicious. Send them a message, explain what’s happening, and point them to the steps above.

When this works:

  1. You have the previous owner’s contact info
  2. They’re willing to help

When it fails:

  1. The seller ghosted you
  2. You bought it from a shop that doesn’t know the original owner

Part 4: Contact Apple

This happened to me with a used iPhone I bought from a small refurbisher. The refurbisher went out of business, and when I wiped the phone, it was locked to the original owner’s Apple ID. I had the receipt from the refurbisher – it showed the serial number – but no way to contact the original owner.

I contacted Apple.

Here’s what I did:

Step 1I went to al-support.apple.com – Apple’s official Activation Lock support page.

Step 2I filled out the request form with my name, email, and phone number.

Step 3I entered the iPhone’s details – model, and serial number (from the receipt).

Step 4I uploaded a photo of the receipt. The serial number was clearly visible.

Step 5I submitted the form and waited.

I submitted it on a Tuesday. By Friday, I got an email from Apple saying the Activation Lock had been removed. I set up the iPhone with my own Apple ID, and it’s been working perfectly ever since.

If you’d rather call: Apple Support can do the same thing over the phone. A friend of mine called them when she got locked out of her iPhone after forgetting her Apple ID password. She had her original receipt from the Apple Store. The rep verified her identity, asked a few security questions, and started the removal process. Two days later, her iPhone was unlocked.

Important notes:

  1. Apple will only do this if you have valid proof of purchase with the serial number or IMEI
  2. The device can’t be marked as lost or stolen
  3. If it’s a company or school device, you need to contact their IT department – Apple won’t touch it

When this works:

  1. You have a receipt or invoice showing the device’s serial number
  2. You’re the legitimate owner
  3. You don’t mind waiting a few days

When it fails:

  1. You bought the device second-hand with no paperwork
  2. The previous owner reported it lost or stolen
  3. You can’t prove you’re the owner

Part 5: Use FoneLab iOS Unlocker to Remove iCloud ID

This brings me back to that first iPhone 12 – the one that started this whole mess.

I bought it from a guy on Facebook Marketplace. Great price, looked mint. He said he’d signed out. I got home, wiped it, and boom – Activation Lock from his Apple ID. I messaged him. Already blocked. No receipt. Cash transaction. I had nothing.

I was out $400 with a brick.

I spent days scrolling through Reddit threads and YouTube videos. Most “free unlock” sites were scams – one asked for my credit card, another tried to install malware.

Then I came across FoneLab iOS Unlocker. I was skeptical, but I had nothing to lose.

What made me try it:

  1. It didn’t need the Apple ID password – that was my whole problem
  2. It worked even with Find My iPhone turned on
  3. No jailbreak required

Here’s how it went to remove Apple ID:

Step 1I downloaded the software on my Windows laptop. Installation was clean – no weird pop-ups.

Step 2I opened it and clicked Remove Apple ID.

Step 3I connected my locked iPhone with a USB cable. The software recognized it right away.

Step 4I clicked Start Now. The program walked me through enabling Two-Factor Authentication. The instructions were clear. It took me about a minute.

click start now remove apple id

Step 5Then confirm your operations and it will begin to remove your Apple ID.

That was it. The iPhone that had been sitting in my drawer for two weeks was finally usable.

I’ve since used the same tool to help a friend unlock an iPhone she bought at a garage sale. Same story – no receipt, no way to find the original owner. FoneLab had it unlocked in about twenty minutes.

When this is your best bet:

  1. You bought a used iPhone and the previous owner is unreachable
  2. You don’t have proof of purchase
  3. You tried to contact the seller and got no response
  4. You just want a solution that works in one sitting

After going through this on my own devices and helping friends with theirs, here’s my advice:

1. If it’s your own device and you know the password, just sign out in Settings. It takes 30 seconds.

2. If you forgot your password, go to iforgot.apple.com before you do anything else. Most of the time, you can get back in within a day.

3. If you’re buying a used iPhone, check Activation Lock before you pay. Meet at a coffee shop with Wi-Fi. Wipe the phone in front of the seller and go through setup to make sure it’s clean. If the seller won’t let you do that, walk away.

4. Get a receipt. Even a handwritten one with the serial number and seller’s signature can help. I learned this the hard way.

5. If you’re selling a device, sign out before shipping. It takes 30 seconds and saves the buyer a huge headache.

6. If you have proof of purchase, use Apple’s online form. It’s free, it’s official, and it takes a few days. I’ve seen it work multiple times.

7. If you don’t have proof and can’t reach the owner, go straight to FoneLab. Don’t waste time on sketchy “free” sites. I almost got scammed twice.

Part 6: FAQs of iCloud ID Remover

Question 1. Why I not allowed to sign out Apple account?

You are unable to log out due to access restrictions. In that case, the Sign Out button will be gray and you are not allowed to sign out of this iCloud or Apple account. To solve the problem, you can go to Settings, tap Screen Time, Content & Privacy Restrictions, and then allow the Account Changes.

Question 2. What happens after you delete the Apple ID account?

When you remove Apple ID from one iOS device, all related iOS data and account details will be erased permanently.

Question 3. How do I create a new Apple ID?

When you want to create a new Apple ID, you can directly sign up one in the Setup screen. Or you can go to Apple official site and open Apple ID page to create a new Apple ID. You can click How to create a new Apple ID link and follow the instructions to re-create a new Apple account.

Final Thoughts

Removing an iCloud ID can be frustrating – especially when you’re staring at a device you own or paid for and can’t use it.

But after going through this myself – with my own devices, with used iPhones, with friends’ devices – I can tell you that there’s always a way.

Here’s the quick guide:

Your Situation Best Method
Your own device, you know the password Method 1: Sign out in Settings
Your own device, you forgot the password Method 2: Reset password or remove via iCloud
Bought used, can reach the previous owner Method 3: Ask them to remove it
Bought used, can’t reach them, but have a receipt Method 4: Contact Apple Support
Bought used, no receipt, no owner Method 5: Use FoneLab iOS Unlocker

I’m not here to sell you on any one method. I’m just telling you what actually worked for me – whether it was my own phone, a used iPhone with a helpful seller, or that nightmare iPhone 12 where I had nothing.

Hopefully, this saves you the hours of trial and error I went through. Good luck – and next time you buy a used iPhone, check Activation Lock before you hand over the cash. I sure will.
