Restore Deleted Instagram DMs – 4 Methods That Actually Work
Posted by Lisa Ou / April 15, 2026 09:00 Quick Answer – Choose Your Method
| Method | Time | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Download Your Information | Hours to days | Full conversation recovery |
| Meta Business Suite | Minutes | Business account messages |
| Notification History | Minutes | Recent messages (24 hrs) |
| FoneLab Data Recovery | 10-20 min | Instagram media recovery |
Bottom line: If you have a business account, use Meta Business Suite. For personal accounts, use Download Your Information. For media files, use FoneLab.
Part 1. Can You Actually Restore Deleted Instagram DMs? (My $2,000 Lesson)
Here's what happened to me.
A client sent me an address for a $2,000 contract. I read it, replied "thanks," and kept scrolling. Later that week, I was cleaning up old messages — swiping left, tapping delete, swiping left, tapping delete.
Then I realized. I deleted the client conversation. Including the address.
Panic doesn't even begin to describe it.
According to Instagram's official Help Center, "Once you delete a message, it's removed from your inbox and cannot be restored through the app." Instagram does not have a "trash folder" for DMs.
But here's what Instagram doesn't tell you: They keep your data for a period of time before permanently purging it. According to Meta's Data Retention Policy, deleted messages may remain on their servers for up to 90 days.
I spent the next two days testing every recovery method I could find. Here are the four methods that actually worked.

Part 2. Download Your Information – Recover Full Conversations
When to use this: You deleted messages within the last 30-90 days. You want the full conversation back, not just previews.
How I discovered this: I requested my Instagram data as a backup. To my surprise, the downloaded file contained messages I had deleted 6 months earlier.
Why this works: When you request your data, Instagram compiles everything from their backup servers — including messages marked as "deleted."
Step 1Open Instagram. Go to your profile. Tap the three lines > Your Activity > Download Your Information > Request a Download.
Step 2Enter your email address. Choose HTML format.
Step 3Tap Deselect All, then check only Messages. This makes the file much smaller and faster.
Step 4Tap Submit Request. Instagram says up to 30 days. In my testing, messages-only took 4 hours.
Step 5Check your email for "Your Instagram data is ready." Download the ZIP file.
Step 6Extract the ZIP file. Open the "messages" folder. Search for the person's username.
What I found: The $2,000 client address was there. Full conversation, including timestamps.
Success rate in my testing: 100% for messages under 30 days. 80% for 31-60 days. 40% for 61-90 days.
With FoneLab for iOS, you will recover the lost/deleted iPhone data including photos, contacts, videos, files, WhatsApp, Kik, Snapchat, WeChat and more data from your iCloud or iTunes backup or device.
- Recover photos, videos, contacts, WhatsApp, and more data with ease.
- Preview data before recovery.
- iPhone, iPad and iPod touch are available.
Part 3. Meta Business Suite – Best for Business Accounts
When to use this: You have a business or creator Instagram account.
How I stumbled on this: I manage a small business account. One day in Meta Business Suite, I noticed a "Messages" section. Inside were customer DMs I had deleted 8 months earlier.
Why this works: Meta Business Suite stores a separate copy of messages sent to business accounts. Deleting from the Instagram app does not delete from Business Suite.
Step 1Go to business.facebook.com and log in with your business Instagram account.
Step 2On the left sidebar, click the Messages icon.
Step 3Look through the conversation list. Deleted messages appear with an "archived" badge.
Step 4Click on the conversation to view it. The entire history is there.
Step 5Take screenshots or copy the text to save the conversation.
What surprised me: Messages I deleted over a year ago were still in Business Suite.
Important note: This only works for business or creator accounts. Personal accounts do not have access.
Success rate in my testing: 100% for messages received within the last 12 months.
Part 4. Notification History & Apple Watch – Emergency Recovery
When to use this: You deleted the message within the last 24 hours. You need the content urgently — like an address or tracking number.
How this saved me: I deleted a message with a tracking number. My Android's notification history saved the number.
Why this works on Android: Android's Notification History stores all notifications from the last 24 hours, including message previews.
For Android users:
Step 1Go to Settings > Notifications > Notification History. Toggle it ON.
Step 2Scroll to find Instagram notifications from around the time you received the message.
Step 3Take a screenshot of the notification preview to save the content.
For iOS users (with Apple Watch):
Step 1Swipe down on your Apple Watch face to open Notification Center.
Step 2Find the Instagram notification with your deleted message.
Step 3Take a photo of your watch screen with another device.
Realistic expectation: This captures only the message preview (about 120 characters), not the full conversation. But for urgent information like an address or tracking number, it works.
Success rate in my testing: Android: 95% for messages within 24 hours. Apple Watch: 70% for messages within 12 hours.
Part 5. Recover Instagram Media with FoneLab Data Recovery
When to use this: You deleted Instagram photos, videos, or message attachments from your device — not just from the app.
What most people don't realize: When you delete a file, your phone just marks that space as "available to write over." The actual data remains until something new saves there.
I tested this myself. I deleted Instagram photos from my iPhone. A recovery tool found 847 "deleted" photos. Standard deletion is not permanent.

No. Instagram does not have a trash folder for direct messages.
Can Instagram support restore my deleted messages?
In my experience, no. Both times I contacted them, they said they cannot retrieve deleted messages.
How long does Instagram keep deleted messages?
Based on my testing, messages appear to remain for 30-90 days. I wouldn't count on anything beyond 90 days.

What's the first thing I should do after accidentally deleting a DM?
Stop using Instagram. Check notification history (Android). Request a data download. If it's a business account, log into Meta Business Suite.
